Print CMYK Strip along panels

I've been having some issues with banding after printing panels that require magenta and yellow ink only. Once the printer gets to an occurrence of black or cyan after these extended periods of printing just yellow and magenta, the there is a ton of banding in the areas that are either blue or black. In some cases, the black and cyan stop functioning almost completely.

I'm still trying to work out why exactly this is happening, but I've found a work around in the meantime. If I print a black strip on the edge of my panels, the black heads are continuously firing, and therefore don't drop out mid print.

Here's my actual; question, though. A former coworker once discovered how to print a cmyk strip along the edge of all the panels. It seems to me it must have been a PosterShop setting, but I haven't found anyway to do this. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks in advance.

It's called a "gutter", and it is in the print options.
