PosterShop v ProductionHouse profiles

After some time learning about media profiles and attempting to get things in line, I have come to realize that my version skips the icc profiling stage... Is this because I am using PosterShop, or is there some option I am missing?

Is there even a point in getting involved in media profiling if I can't do the icc? Seems pointles... my profiles colors suck...

One of the major differences between PosterShop and ProductionHouse is the ability to generate ICC profiles. I believe that you can have that feature enabled on your key for PosterShop, but I don't know that the cost for that will be that far off from the upgrade cost to ProductionHouse. I'll find out specifics and post back.

I personally don't see much point in doing your own profiling if you can't do the ICC part of it, but I'm a profiling novice as well, so perhaps one of the experts (Marco, Hotspur) might have some different thoughts. I suppose you can still learn the basics of the process and get familiar with the other pieces atleast.

Well I asked a contact in Onyx sales, and his reply was...

Onyx Graphics Sales Wrote:It is much more effective to do this kind of update with an upgrade to Production House. the price is about the same, and you get all of the Production House features

This is what I assumed the answer would be. I don't have specifics on cost however, you can contact your rep for that, which you may have done already.

For PhotoShop users it is possible to import an ICC profile into your media profile if you have another application that creates ICC output profiles (Monaco Profiler, i1Match or something). It isn't as seamless as doing it all in Media Manager, but it's not that painful. You just do all the other stuff in Media Manager (Ink Limits, Restrictions, Calibrations, etc.) and after that make a profile with the other application. Then you can import the ICC into your media profile via Media Manager's View Media Library. Right-click on the mode of the media profile you created and the pop up will have an option to "Import ICC...". Doesn't help you if you don't have a profiling program though.

The other option is to create your media profile using Advanced Grayscale which is a non-ICC workflow. I've never done that but there's probably some posts on this board you can search for that might give you more insight into that.

I guess the obvious point is that many devices come with their own icc generating software and many users own Monaco / Profilemaker etc so they can build thier own profiles without having to pay for ProductionHouse.

If you don't own other icc software you can always upgrade to PH should you decide to start building your own profiles and the Onyx engine is superior to the other vendors in terms of gamut - maybe slightly less so regarding neutrality until recently where Onyx have caught up in this regard - it's also much easier to use.

Historically the availability of the icc colour engine was used to differentiate the products as this element of the profiling process was sourced from a third party and as such licensed for a substantial cost: no icc build = big cost saving and thus it made sense to leave this particular part out in the cheaper version. The rest of the profiling process had no license costs and therefore it didn't hurt to leave them in for Postershop so you could at least do your own recalibrations.

Now Onyx uses its own icc colour engine but the availability of the icc build is still used as a differentiator, as is Layout Tool, and extra print queues, rip engine etc.

I actually had a big forehead slapping kind of moment this morning -- I can create an icc through Eye-One Match and import it into the media manager.

VOILA! Much better profile!

Big question -- When I create a new media and go through all of the steps I have a media I can print with in ONYX. When I go to Eye-One Match and print the CMYK chart I assume it uses the default quickset for the printer I have specified. I assume that I should edit the default quickset to have all profiles off and turn off of the spot color replacement table -- am I correct? Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks!
