Hi

After upgrading from Onyx from 10.25 to 11, we are now having issues with printing PDF's missing images and also the odd font problems, with 'W' being the main problem letter printing distorted.

Is anyone else having any issues since upgrading?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

I just received a PM from another forum member who is also experiencing this. Unfortunately, file processing is not where I spend the bulk of my time, nor did I experience this during the months of testing Onyx 11. Please contact our support staff so they can get an example file and escalate the issue.

Thanks
Doug

Thanks for the swift reply Doug.

I am going to contact my local Onyx re-seller who is already aware of us having a problem with Onyx 11. This is the third time we have downloaded the upgrade, as we thought it had originally got corrupted on our first two attempts. Also, we had the RIP PC completely reformatted to start a fresh install, and then we had our Onyx supplier call in and re-install. All did seem fine initially, but now we are having problems with files, including PDF's, PowerPoint etc, and the only way to totally eliminate the file content changing, is to print the PDF as an image, which does take longer to process.

I do have a spare RIP with Onyx 10.25 on, so I will be getting this set-up again, as I can't keep having this problem occuring with the customers at the university where I work, needing quick turnarounds on most work.

I will update this thread when I know more about this problem.

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,

We are experiencing some of the same problems with Onyx 11 and are trying to work with Onyx support now, so far we have been getting the run around with them saying nobody is having this problem but us, and that we are doing something wrong, we are going to send some files to Onyx and let them take a look, if I hear anything productive I will pass the information along.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark

Quick update.

I sent a couple of our problem files (PDF's) to our Onyx supplier, and they have now got back to me saying they are now having the problems too when testing.

They are reporting back about the issues to Onyx and will let me know when they get any answers from them.

Please let me know if you get any further answers about the problem.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul

We have experienced the same problems with Production House 11 and PDF files. We have had missing images and major font issues including the same problem with the letter W. I also noticed that some PDF files with the fonts embedded were printing with changed fonts.

I have now removed version 11 and reinstalled 10.2.5. All of the problems have now disappeared and the same PDF files we had issues with now print correctly.

After some time on the phone and sending Onyx some files that we were having problems with this is what they come up with and it seems to have worked.
From Onyx:

Most likely it is the transparency option under the rip configuration.

Do me a favor, in Rip Queue go to Setup>Rip Configuration>Configure Jaws
Rip. Make sure that the setting TRANSPARENCY=OFF is NOT checked. If this option
is checked, then transparency will be turned off and your files will render
wrong hence the element drop outs.

FYI, go to Help>About......Rip-Queue and check the version number you are
running, I used version 11.0.0.107

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, that did not fix this issue with us. We sent some trouble files to our vendor and they have confirmed the issue on their end as well. They are currently trying to work with the Onyx engineers on this issue.

So far, our only option is to revert back to 10 until this gets sorted out. I am a little concerned that the first reaction we received was that we were probably sending files with missing links(?), even though version 10 is printing the same files just fine.

Frustrating.

Hi all

I have now been updated that there is a problem with Onyx 11, and that they are working on a patch to fix this issue.

Is this the same information that other Onyx 11 users are getting from their vendor?

Thanks

Paul

We had the same issues with previous versions if PDF is not created with Acrobat. If it was just Saved as or Exported to it was a gamble. Not sure if that the case since we haven't upgraded to v. 11 yet.

Thanks for your information.

I know what you mention about how PDF's are saved can cause problems like this, but our problem files can be created in Acrobat XI Pro and still give the same outcome.

Cheers

Hi all

Times passed on now and at our place we keep being told that a fix for version 11 is imminent. So just wondered if anyone had any updates yet from Onyx about timescales or if they have heard anything different?

We're still running 10.25 by the way and getting frustrated by this !

Thanks

Paul

Quick update.

Downloaded the Onyx 11 patch from Onyx support page this morning, so will be doing some tests with problem files I saved from the initial PosterShop 11 download. First impression are that it looks to have fixed the issues, but still had a couple of images not print on a PDF. This could be a corrupt file so will hold judgement till later when I have put some more jobs through the RIP.

Hmmm.. I'm still seeing wrong prints.

A simple file with a white logo (has overprint according to Acrobat) on a red background. But Postershop 11 just gives a red box.
Have tried a lot of Configure Jaws RIP -settings but no luck so far.

How is the white color of the logo defined?
Using a spotcolor white ink (e.g. Spot 1) or no ink?

Pdf file from a costumer.

The logo is DeviceCMYK, all values = 0, Overprint = True, OPM = 1,ri = Colorimetric
The Background is also DeviceCMYK, 0,100,100,0, Overprint = False, OPM = 1,ri = Colorimetric.

However, the file rip and print correctly using PosterShop 10...

In this case the output of Thrive is correct:
A white image (all values=0) with overprint on a non transparent object will not show on a print.

You can see this also when using the "preview overprint" option of Acrobat Pro (in the preferences->page display settings).

Postershop has a RIP setting called "OVERPRINT".
If I remember correctly, this was disabled by default.
In this case the overprint is not applied to the white object.
In general this is what you want (in this case), but not according to what is designed in the pdf.

The Adobe engine in Thrive automatically handles the overprint settings.

Here is a webpage with a nice description about overprint and white :

I'm still having a problem with customers PDF's, when I first print to version 11 all looks fine on screen, but if I change the size in Job Editor, logos are missing leaving just a white box. Other files have looked fine on the Onyx preview, but background images not printed at all when sent to print.

My updated version shows as 11.0.0.107 does this sound correct?

We upgraded to version 11 about 2 weeks ago and our version is the same as the one you are quoting ie ending in .107 We have been back to Onyx because we are having pdf issues but the word back is that it is down to our FB500 as it is a contone printer.

According to our supplier:-

What has been discovered is that the current build of Onyx 11 (not the Thrive products) suffers from an issue associated with image files containing elements in the greyscale colour space. K elements within CMYK are unaffected and only workflows using Contone profiles will show the problem. As far as can be seen at the moment, elements in the greyscale colour space fail to be rendered correctly as black in the RGB needed to pass printer information to a Contone device. Instead they are reproduced as white.

Current workarounds include:
1. Avoid using Greyscale (K only) elements by converting them to CMYK in the design application
2. Temporarily revert to using Onyx 10.2.5 until a fix has been issued

So it seems that for now anyone with Epson aquaous, Canon or HP printers will have to wait for another patch.

We are rasterising files in Photoshop and re-saving as tiffs if we think the job isn't going to print correctly but the problem is patchy. Most jobs seem to run ok.

Thanks for the update with the same problems we all same to be having.
We've gone back to 10.25 to avoid any problems and wait to see what our suppliers say to do next. Version 11 is unpredictable so we won't be using again anytime soon!

There is an extra workaround - you can use halftone profiles.
HP Z6200 series come with a set of both types so just switch to halftone profile library.
If your printer has both workflows but only has Contone profiles eg Canon ipf you could build a halftone profile and all will be OK (assuming you want to / can do!)

Just found this thread after spending many hours trying to fix the same problems, recently upgraded to Onyx11 and have had to resort back to version 10.25 as a fix
I appreciate this thread may be a little outdated but has there been a fix as yet

I've not been on for a while, but I'm still using 10.25, I have downloaded the second patch that Onyx brought out to fix version 11, and I'm still hearing has does not fixed all the problems.

I need to speak to our supplier to sort out what's happening when I get the time, but will stick with 10.25 for now.

It would be nice to hear if anyone is now using 11 with no faults! ?

Cheers

Dissapointed we have paid for something that we can not use
Willing to give it until end of this week to hear back from them with any news
