Technically this would be an upgrade as it's a 3rd level revision (ie 7.3.1 -> 7.3.2), and you should be able to upgrade it with little to no problems. I have had both positive and negative upgrading experiences in the past, but I always try to test it out during the beta cycles. Doing an upgrade install worked just fine for me on this update.

I'll see what Onyx tech support is recommending to customers and report back. Fresh install always gives you a good starting point, but I sometimes don't have the luxury of the downtime while doing a clean install.

Anyone else have any comments?

I have never really done fresh installs, except when going from 5 to 6, 6 to 7, etc... I've always just done upgrades through AutoUpdate and have never really had any major problems when doing something like 7.3.1 to 7.3.2, and so on....

Just a note to upgraders.
I found with the previous version settings the rip would choke on PDF and EPS files.

After some headscratching and swearing I finally found this on the Onyx site:

Quote:After updating to 7.3.2 I get rip errors with my postscript files
Updating to 7.3.2 gives the RIP error "/undefinedfilename, OffendingCommand" in postscript files. These files ripped without an error in previous versions.

This can happen if the FIXIMGTRANS and FIXSPOTTRANS options listed under Setup, Postscript, Configure RIP are checked. These options are no longer needed with version 7.3.2. Remove the check mark from these options if present and try ripping your file again.

Today i installed the 7.3.2 upgrade without uninstalling the previous version.
Unfortunately the same error still exists (jobs larger than 5meters print without images!!)
So i ended up uninstalling all files related to Onyx, and started with a fresh install!!
And,.......... #$#$%% still the same problem!
Previously i had contact with the European headquarter that the problem would be solved in this upgrade!

So what's next?

Thanks!

Do you know (did they mention) if this was an issue with the device specifically or if it was the software that was the issue?

I don't see any mentions in the release notes of a specific fix related to your printer or that describes the same problem. There is one update note that reads "Printing Multiple tiles with cut marks give extra white space in Layout" but I have no idea if that is related to what you're experiencing, I just remember you mentioning there being registration marks in the other thread, then nothing after that, as far as the print.

Did you by chance have any open support tickets with Onyx on this issue, or did they just verbally say it would be fixed in this release?

I'm trying to get more details so I can contact Onyx as well and see if I can dig up some info on the issue and hopefully get your some help, so whatever details you can give me would be a big help.

Sorry you're still having the issues, how frustrating!

the issue might be the resolution used. There is a file limit size in Windows which might cause this issue. In case you are using a 720dpi resolution on this printer and you are using CMYKcmk inks (I assume you do), the amount of data is huge.

Couple of things you can try:
1. Use a lower resolution (540x720 or even lower)
2. Use a CMYK print mode. (in case you already do: change the resolution)
3. Try to use pixel duplication and set it to 4 for this size of jobs (Edit Quick Sets/Advanced/Postcript file)
4. Since you are printing tiles: are you using the "Submit tiles as separate jobs" option in Preflight Tiling tab? If not: try it. Using this option creates separate files for each tile and will eventually solve the file size error.

Couple of questions:
1. You mentioned it doesn't print IMAGES, what about vector information?
2. Does it open in Preflight?
3. Did you try to print the file with a smaller size?

Ciao!
Marco

Thanks Marco for the reply!,

1 We print at 720dpi, but in previuos versions (7.2 and lower) we never had any issues regarding file size, even printing bigger jobs with no problem.

2 Cmyk is most common with us.

3 Have to check this, and try setting it to 4

4 "Submit tiles as separate jobs" is the only solution left, and this is working oke!

As an answer to you questions;
Some vector information is printing, but not always,
the file shows up correctly in preflight!
Yes i did print the job with a smaller size (smaller than 4 meters is oke)

i hope this answers your questions.

Thanks again!

To complicate things more i ran in to another issue (i seem to be negative, but that is not my intentionSmiley).
We had a doublesided print job which has to be centered on the media.
In printer options i have to choose to disable printhead correction for centering the job on the media, but this option doesn't work anymore, when i disable the option and close print
option, i checked the print options again and the printhead correction is turned on again!
It took me halve a day to discover this.
So i uninstalled 7,3.2 and went back to version 7.3.0 to solve this!!

It wasn't the most productive day for usSmiley

Cheers!

do I understand you correctly that the issue with the 'empty' prints has been resolved by using the 'Submit tiles as separate jobs' option?

Regarding the driver options:
This issue MIGHT be related to the fact that you MIGHT have used a 7.2 (or 7.3) driver in 7.3.2. Some drivers have been changed and we have seen issues with a lot of drivers when we didn't use the 7.3.2 version. Including disappearing options and settings that didn't stick.

In case you're on Vista:
Make sure you are logged on as a LOCAL administrator and UAC has been turned off. So: do not use domain user accounts unless they're local. As soon as you put your workstation in a Windows domain the rights MIGHT be distributed from the server. ONYX is not the only software having problems with it, we've seen it with a lot of RIP's and other apps. In some cases we have seen issues too where file didn't get updated because of user right restrictions.

Hope this helps.
ciao!

1 Indeed the problem does not occur when i submit jobs as separate tiles!

2 The driver was the newest one available from Onyx.

Ok that is good news! Regarding the driver options:
1. make sure you turn off the virus scanner (if you have one)
2. check the user right stuff as mentioned above

If that doesn't work, escalate the issue to ONYX USA.

Ciao!

In the past I have seen "submit tiles a separate jobs " to solve other problems. On the colorspan printers we had some problems with printer pausing between swaths. That was solved with separate jobs option.

Another thing that might cause issues with 'empty files' and image quality issues is the 'RIP on-the-fly option'. I've seen multiple issues where files got distorted, parts where left out or cryptic error messages occurred.

Submit tiles as separate jobs reduces the file size per file. This file size has a maximum size. Parameters that influence the file size are:

1. output resolution
2. variable dot (also called MD in the driver settings)
3. number of ink channels (CMYK + lm and lc)

There are several option that might help you to overcome file size problems:
1. When printing very large images for a long viewing distance purpose:
- reduce the printer resolution
- print without light inks (since light inks are only used to virtually increase the
resolution in the light areas)
- print with a fixed dot instead of variable dot. This will also increase your RIP
speed.

2. I will talk to ONYX about this and see if they can solve it. I think this issue is new since
7.3.x. I can't remember seeing it this often with older releases.

3. Use the virtual output resolutions. Some printers support resolutions which look like
540@720 or 360@720. In short: the file gets ripped at the resolution mentioned before
the '@' sign and gets interpolated while printing to the resolution behind the '@' sign.
We have tested this and it works very good. Given the sizes you print I guarantee you
will not see the difference.

Ciao!
Marco

Just received an e-mail from Onyx Graphics; they have released a new Jaws.dll file for 7.3.2!

It needs to be copied into a folder called PSRIP that resides inside the Onyx folder, or whatever you have called the Onyx installation folder. Best thing to do is close down all Onyx applications then browse to C:\Onyx\psrip (or wherever you installed Onyx 7.3.2), and rename the existing jawsdll.dll file as something like old_jawsdll.dll; then copy this new jawsdll.dll file into the psrip folder and restart RIPQueue. You may need to restart the PC but that is not a definite.

Am new to the world of Onyx, and find it incredible that they have managed to make the Jaws Engine do what it does with PDF-X files and the like in 7.3.2. I have been working with Adobe Core RIPS since 2006 and forgot about the headaches the old Jaws RIP platform was.

Has anyone had any experience with putting through Quark 8.1.2 Live transparency export to pdf, pdfs yet? or indeed PDF-X/4 pdfs?
Right now I am downgrading/upgrading all pdfs to X-la compatible via PitStopPro09 and having good success rates.

This JAWS updates fixes an issue with EXIF information in PDF and embedded TIFF files crashing the RIP before interpreting the files. Not sure if it fixes the issues mentioned above. Please try and post your experience here! ;-)

By far the best way to handle PDF's today is to use PrepEdge! PEP is compatible to the latest PDF standards, including PDF/X versions.

I mean, which printer is it? Is it the brand new Hosomoki Schakwagi DS1250 or an EPSON or so?

EDIT: Make sure you download the latest driver when using 7.3.2. A driver from Feb 2008 is too old anyway!

Okay... I downloaded the profile and printer driver download tool, and it won't load up. I am running Vista.
It installed correctly, no problems there... but when I double click it, nothing happens. I watch the system processes - it shows up, then disappears.

Any ideas?
