I guess the title says it all.
But when creating new media it would be cool if media manager automatically would choose the ink restriction based on the reading in the linearisation print. ( maybe based on some custom settings e.i. euroscale or swop target densities ).
Other RIPs already has this.
Does X100 ring a bell anywhere???

I just wanted to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who has given advice and information in my quest for good color management. I feel like I am in a pretty good place now and I owe it to you guys.

The big test and confirmation of my profiles came when recent job for a customer required that the same piece of art be printed on 6 different medias across two different machines (canvas, watercolor paper, photo paper, bond paper...). They all matched! Well, almost matched -- but as close as I would ever expect.

Not everything is sunshine and roses, there are still some issues that I am dealing with, but for the most part I feel like the waste of time and media was worth it.

Just recently updated to GG-10.0.0.2 on my z6100's firmware. Well, apparently there is a known issue with Onyx. From their support website:

HP z6100 Firmware Version 10
If you are running the z6100 and have updated the firmware to version 10 you must keep the printer calibration updated. If you do not then you may see issues printing large jobs. Once the printer calibration is complete it will resume normal operations.

So, I called Onyx, and they told me that we have to keep the paper advance calibrated because before there was communication between Onyx and the printer, and now that communication has been severed. But there is something not making sense to me. If there was communication before - was the printer reading something in all the time, sending advance calibration data to Onyx, then Onyx would adjust the printer calibration settings?

The guy on the phone did his best to explain it to me, but I'm confused, still. The reason this all came up was because everything I printed, on every printer I updated, started coming out too long or too short, and I would have to adjust the paper feed in Onyx every day, whereas I used to only have to do it maybe once a month.

Anyone have insight on this?
Thanks,

I'm just now getting little bits on information on the upcoming release from Onyx, which has been codenamed "X10". There's not a lot being said right now and they're keeping really quiet, but I wanted to share what I know.

What I'm told at this point is that X10 will dramatically improve the profiling process removing frustration and guess work, which should make all of us color newbies out there happier. The profiling steps have been streamlined, which will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to get good profiles.

The cutting workflow for X10 is said to be much better saving customers a lot of time and giving them control to build workflows for unattended printing and cut file generation.

I don't know exactly what they are, but I'm told this release will have several ‘industry firsts’ in it. How's that for a nice little teaser? As the information slowly comes out I will continue to share what I can, so stay tuned for more.

Hi All,

Several updates of Onyx ago I got so fed up with PDF files being interpretted incorrectly by the RIP I introduced a preflight to preflight. It was meant as a work around until I gained a better understanding of what Onyx was doing to the pdf's as I felt sure it was operator ignorance causing the problems.

Customers PDF files are opened in Acrobat, Preflighted to /x1a standard, then the x1a is processed by the RIP. Problems in the PDF's are caught by Acrobat preflight and rectified. The x1a has a single specific profile specified, so all PDF's that reach the RIP are an identical "flavour", the same input profile is applied, and production is surprise free and colour accurate.

However, it dawns on my that 12 months on, we're still preflighting in this way. We're manually doing part of the RIP's job because we couldn't make it do what it's supposed to do! Now I'm reading how 7.3.2 handles transparencies and spots from pdf/x4 and it's time to get rid of my workaround and get that time back for sensible pasttimes like drinking and well, err, more drinking!

Here's what I'm sure is a simple question - that I can't find an answer to. Can you help?

If I have a PDF/X4 (which include specified ICC Profiles) and I open it in Onyx - what does Onyx do with the file re: profiles? Does it automatically assign the correct input profile(s) or do I manually need to apply the input profiles?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

We have been manually calibrating our z6100 for the last year fine. All of a sudden when i try to calibrate any of the medias for this machine the RIP crashes. It seems to have happened after updating the rip to the lastest version and then applying the lastest patch. Interestingly I can calibrate any other machine with the eye-one just not the z6100. I have tried:

- Recopying the old jaws files with the latest patch
- Manually copying the jaws files from the lastest patch
- Downloading the lastest printer install for this machine

We dont use the onboard eye-one as it seems to get the readings totally wrong and thinks everything is darker than it should.

Recently I had to update the key so we could use the new HP Designjet L22550 Latex but you wouldnt think that would cause the fault as I can also calibrate this with the eye-one or the onboard eye-one.

* latest update - using the previous version of the RIP lets me run this calibration, seems to be something with the newer version.

*even lastest update - installed onyx from scratch and problem seems to be better

Hey everyone,

With the multiple issues I was having with XP, I asked Onyx tech about upgrading to Windows 7.

I was told about turning off UAC, read on the the site that an alternative network adapter might be necessary. I turned UAC off and already had added a network adapter when using with XP, since the machine was originally a Vista computer.

I am getting a "Print Data Error - Print Aborted" message. This happened with Vista as well.

I had it set to <Port 9100> and tried MLP1. Both started but error would happen under 20% of a 65" print.

Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.
In Media Manager the two active printers will print, but the third will say "Printing is disabled for this printer".

My problem right now is that it states this for two of my printers... They are both networked, unlike my HP9000 which is a direct USB connection. I don't know if this is the problem, nothing has changed...

Media Manager did this to me before, so I shut everything down and when I restarted everything was fine. Not this time though.

Any suggestions?

I am trying to move this shop away from Wasatch and have everything run off of ONYX. (Right now we have two RIPS... ugh...) My custom profiles through ONYX have been pretty consistently better than Wasatch and the dot patterns are smoother through ONYX.

Problem is:
We do some art repro work and my canvas profile sucks... I've tried to profile the media a couple of times now and my darks always seem to come out very muddy or they lack the detail of the Wasatch profile for the same media.

Help? Anybody? Should I try more patches on my calibration swatch step (normally I do 19 -- 5% difference).
Thanks!

I made sure to use embedded ICC profiles and nothing works. What I really can't understand is every other color is perfect. Does anyone have any ideas?

You may have heard of Correct Color. We're one of the most well-known color management solutions providers in the US. We're also an Onyx dealer, btw, and we can make very attractive packages on Onyx installs and machine profiling and color workflow optimization. As well as custom installs--for instance: Postershop with Layout.
But enough of that. If you've ever wondered how to evaluate an ICC profile. Here's some info on how Correct Color does it.

Hi All,

Just curious if anyone is using a SpectroSwing? Onyx appears to have no issues with the device, but the Barbieri software that launches gets "Error White n. 3 not found" when auto aligning. (Manual aligning makes no sense, so I abandoned even trying). BTW... I'm using the latest driver from Barbieri.

If anyone has tips I'd like to hear from you.
Cheers!

Now I know this was a problem before, but there was a printer firmware update that fixed it. But now, it's happening again.

When I run out of ink, mid-print, the printer stops printing. I change the ink, hit OK, it prints for another minute or so, but ends the print with a straight line. Not a fuzzy one, as if I hit the cancel button, but a harsh line, as if Onyx cancelled the print.

I am on firmware 8.0.0.2, and it appears as though that is the most up to date version. I am on Onyx 7.3.2. All up to date everywhere. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks,
